Our mission. as community collaborators and partners, is to encourage, promote, and reward safe and healthy choices made by junior and senior high school girls who thrive in adverse conditions. We seek to prevent and reduce underage drinking, driving under the influence, and usage of other drugs while increasing protective factors in the lives of students.
Our History. This is a prom dress giveaway like no other. The Dallas Independent School District (DISD), the Dallas Police Department and Whatchamacallit Dresses began this worthwhile event in 2001 to reward and reinforce young women’s decisions for healthy behavior. Counselors and teachers in the Dallas ISD nominated Juniors and Seniors who were in financial hardship but in good standing (grades, citizenship and school attendance). Today, numerous school districts in the Dallas area request students to complete a registration form, write an essay detailing either “Why I Choose Not to Use Alcohol and Other Drugs” or “What Can the Community Do to Prevent Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse”, and sign a pledge to be alcohol and other drug free. At the BuzzFree Promises Dress and Tux Giveaway, the students participate in a series of workshops on alcohol and other drug education, leadership and more. Then, they choose from hundreds of beautiful new or gently worn donated prom dresses or tuxes followed by fashion show produced just for them.
